Rabbit snails, also known as Tylomelania snails, are a fascinating species of freshwater snail that are popular among aquarium enthusiasts. They are native to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, and are known for their unique appearance, wide range of colors, and interesting behavior.

Size and Colors

Rabbit snails are relatively large compared to other snail species, with adults typically reaching sizes of 2 to 4 inches in length. They come in a variety of colors, including shades of brown, yellow, and orange, as well as more vibrant hues like blue and purple. Some snails even have stripes or spots on their shells.

Natural Habitat

They are found in streams and rivers throughout Sulawesi, where they live among rocks and vegetation. They prefer areas with slow-moving water and plenty of hiding places, and are often found in large groups.

Personality and Temperament

These vibrant creatures are known for their curious and active personalities. They are often seen crawling around the aquarium, exploring their surroundings and looking for food. They are generally peaceful creatures and can be kept with other peaceful fish and invertebrates.

Diet

Rabbit snails are omnivorous, meaning they will eat both plant and animal matter. They will feed on algae, detritus, and leftover fish food in the aquarium, but they also require a source of calcium to maintain their shells. It is important to provide them with a varied diet, including algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and crushed coral or cuttlebone.

Life Cycle and Breeding

Unlike pest snails, rabbits reproduce sexually requiring a male and female. Rabbits are monomorphic meaning their sexes are indistinguishable from each other requiring invasive observations to tell them apart. These nails are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live offspring rather than laying eggs. They have a relatively long lifespan for a snail, with some individuals living up to 5 years in captivity. Breeding rabbit snails can be challenging, as they require specific water parameters and conditions to reproduce. However, if the conditions are right, they can produce large batches of young snails.

Tylomelanias are a unique and fascinating species that can add color and personality to any aquarium. They require specific care and attention to thrive, but with the right setup, they can be a rewarding addition to any aquatic community.
